![]() | The DC Jazz Festival and THEARC Theater present a master class with renowned jazz vocalist René Marie. For music students and music appreciation students, this 60-minute session will explore the significant contribution of jazz vocalists in American history and culture. Jazz, our country's singular original art form, originated and was developed in the United States, and the overwhelming majority of the world's most outstanding jazz artists continue to be from the United States. Yet many students are unaware of the significance of jazz and its many iconic figures including Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Nancy Wilson, and more. Unmistakably honest and unpretentious while transforming audiences worldwide, René Marie has drawn a legion of fans and music critics who find themselves not only entertained, but encouraged by her performances. Following in the footsteps of legendary jazz singers including Abby Lincoln, Dianne Reeves and Sarah Vaughan, René Marie is one of the most popular jazz vocalists on the scene today. Q & A will follow by students. Moderated by Sunny Sumter, Executive Director, DC Jazz Festival ** This tour engagement of René Marie is funded through Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation’s Jazz Touring Network program with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. EVENING CONCERT: René Marie will also perform in concert at THEARC Theater on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 7:30pm. Click here for details.
