Winter Newsletter 2016: Join Thousands in the Celebration by Agatha Tomasik

Release Date
Thursday, February 18, 2016

It’s no secret that Washington, DC has introduced some of the greatest musical legends in the world. From Duke Ellington to Shirley Horn to Marvin Gaye to Chuck Brown our city has been a catalyst for creativity.  Well, we can’t help, but wonder, “Who’s next?” and know you’re thinking the same thing.

The DC Jazz Festival - a community of friends, like you, celebrates our city’s unique jazz heritage and invests in its promising future – launching local artists, activating neighborhoods through year-round events, introducing the uniquely American tradition of jazz into embassies, and of course, throwing the best event in town every June.  This year, we’re also launching a national competition, DCJAZZPRIX, to uncover our nation’s next jazz star.

Beyond the acclaimed artists we celebrate and the promising talents we promote, we know there are rising stars in our community  - across all eight Wards, from all backgrounds, and of all ages.

Every week, we’re bringing enriching jazz instruction and education to middle-schoolers - approximately 80% of whom come from low-income families. This summer, one student was even accepted into a prestigious program at the Berklee College of Music.  These young musicians are more likely to excel academically, work in teams, and pursue leadership opportunities in life.

We’re also providing nourishing early childhood programming for youngsters in Ward 8, our city’s most economically distressed neighborhood. These children may only be 6-weeks to 3-years old, but can they bop!

We’re able to provide these programs to 5,000 kids from low-income every year free-of-charge because of supporters, like you.  Please consider making a donation or becoming a corporate sponso today.

If you’d like to stay connected all year, consider joining our Circle of Friends. Membership starts at only $350. Please contact Agatha A. Tomasik for more details at agatha.tomasik@dcjazzfestival.org.
