LEARN MORE
These performances are for DC public and charter schools only. They are not open to the public.
Each 75-minute field trip will feature Cuban-born violinist, vocalist and composer Yilian Cañizares and her trio. Artists will guide students and their teachers/chaperones through the connections between jazz and international rhythms including Afro-Cuban rhythms and DC’s unique musical art form, go-go. Connections will include each musical genre’s overlapping themes of improvisation, blues, sampling, signifying and swagger.
Prior to the field trip, teachers from each registered school will have access to a professional development session outlining intersections of the musical elements for a more informed field trip experience. This session has become an essential tool in preparing educators for our field trips, introducing them to the DCPS Arts Framework’s Act cycle terms, and explaining how these themes will be explored in the International Rhythms of Jazz field trip and preparing teachers to lead a pre-field trip workshop with their respective students.
This program is free with registration. Bus Transportation is subject to availability. Doors open a half an hour before the performances.
This program is made possible the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, with additional support provided by the Galena-Yorktown Foundation, the Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, the Leonard and Elaine Silverstein Family Foundation, and the Venable Foundation.
